| Empowered |
[Jul. 7th, 2008|10:01 am] |
|
Its Monday morning and for some odd reason things feel right. I got to work and solved 3 problems easily. I went to juno to find loads of new funky deep tunes right up my alley. I just feel a buzz, its odd. After a pretty difficult weekend where everything seemed out of wack and not quite right, today I feel clear, today I feel empowered. |

So, drinking, sexy men, public nudity and sex, more drinking and sexy men, comics, 9 hour dj set, hot sex with international tourists.
My weekend, in a nutshell. Starting Wednesday and finishing sunday evening. FUN!!! |

| Life really is strange... |
[Jun. 19th, 2008|02:34 pm] |
I find that certain characters persist in my life even if the original person behind the character is removed.
Today I had the unusual feeling that a very old friend, who I've not seen in years, had been reinserted into my life as a new person. Of course the reinserted version had been tapped with the sexy bear stick but an old photo showed the point of divergence.
It all ties into my notion that there are many version of YOU going on simultaneously in an attempt to map reality in 5 dimensions... |

So err, here are more tracks from that time...
DJ Hell - My Definition of House Music
CJ Bolland - Horsepower
Jeff Mills - the Bells
I could go on and on and on and on... |

| Understanding Grant pt 3.3 - Indo Tribe : Owl |
[May. 28th, 2008|03:15 pm] |
Very early FSOL doing old school tech. Another of my beloved classics. They don't make techno like this anymore...
|
|
|
| Understanding Grant pt 3.2 - The Orb : Little Fluffy Clouds |
[May. 28th, 2008|03:03 pm] |
Another absolutely pivotal track in my life. This reminds me of the beauty of early rave. I went from an angsty black wearing metal head to bright and shinny acid head. It was like a huge new world had opened up to explore where everything was fun and beautiful. Not that it stayed that way, but it was beautiful while it lasted.
Dr Alex is yet another hot as fuck straight bear by the way, LOL!

| Understanding Grant pt 3.1 - Rhythm Is Rhythm : It Is What It Is |
[May. 28th, 2008|02:57 pm] |
So, all this dancing and acid changed what I was listening too. It was all about Detroit Techno at the start. Here is early Derrick May as Rhythim Is Rhythim.
I love the chords in this.

| Understanding Grant pt 3 - Dave Clarke |
[May. 28th, 2008|02:45 pm] |
The decades changed and I moved into my 20s. It was all about acid and techno. The weekends were what I lived for and I could not get enough of it. Dave Clarke is one of my heroes of that time. I think you'll see the connection between the metal I like and the techno I like.
Dave Clarke - Red 2 'Wisdom to the Wise' - THE classic. One of my favourite tech tracks ever. It took me years to track it down. Now I have it once on CD and twice on vinyl :)
Aphrohead - In the Dark We Live (Dave Clarke mix) - Another classic from the time, and yes I own this too now ;)
My record collection is a happy place! |

| Understanding Grant pt 2.6 - Godflesh : Slavestate |
[May. 28th, 2008|02:33 pm] |
This marks the beginning of the end of my time with metal. As I started to go for harder and more brutal metal I began moving toward grindcore and industrial. Then industrial started to bleed over to techno. There was this, pitch shifter and then fear factory. Then the acid adventure began...
You notice this samples Stakker Humanoid heavily....

|
| Understanding Grant pt 2.5 - Bolt Thrower : Cenotaph |
[May. 28th, 2008|02:26 pm] |
More brutal grindcore. Bolt Thrower came to my attention via roleplaying believe it or not. Their first album was very Warhammer 40,000 (Gamesworkshop did all the design and the band wrote lyrics based on the game). This track is the best thing they did.

| Understanding Grant pt 2.4 - Carcass : Corporal Jigsaw Quandry |
[May. 28th, 2008|02:17 pm] |
While we are doing "Grant - the teenage years" here is another of my fave metal tracks. The mighty Carcass with my favourite track of theirs "Corporal Jigsaw Quandry". Its about a mortician who gets a body that's been cubed. He job is to getting all back together for the funeral, what a quandry! LOL!
BRUTAL!!! |
|
|
| Understanding Grant pt 2.3 - Pantera |
[May. 28th, 2008|12:19 pm] |
So, while mentioning hot metal bears, how can I forget Phil Anselmo of Pantera! Another of my fave metal bands, helped no end by Phil's total studliness.
This a great track, and of course the highlight is Phil doing his best impersonation of Henry Rollins (another of my heroes).
|
|
|
| Understanding Grant pt 2.2 - SLAYER!!! |
[May. 28th, 2008|12:09 pm] |
And of course there is Slayer!
This track 'Angel of Death', opener of the totally incredible 'Reign in Blood' has one of the best metal screams ever! Tom Araya is a total metal god!!!
and Kerry King is very hot, straight metal bear mk2.. |
|
|
| Understanding Grant Pt 2 - Anthrax! |
[May. 28th, 2008|11:23 am] |
Before there was techno, there was metal... at least in the world of Grant. Metal helped me through one of the most difficult periods of my life, school. And in metal it was Anthrax that I loved most. They are still one of my all time favourite bands and their shit still rocks. They are still fucking heavy, unlike Metallica or Megadeth, and you know what... Scott Ian is still fucking hot. Scott Ian is the reason I have a shaved head and a beard, straight bear that he is...
Anthrax help me keep my shit together when I was at the bottom of the barrel and thought there was no way out.
Back in the day... 86 world tour!!! A.I.R - one of my all time favourite Anthrax songs.
Anthrax invent Nu-metal ten years before anyone else. Anthrax vs Public Enemy - Bring the noise
Recentish reformation gig. Caught in a MOSH! Check the crowd going apeshit! Fucking RAWK!!!!

| Understanding Grant Pt 1 - Stakker Humanoid |
[May. 27th, 2008|04:09 pm] |
This song and this video are so pivotal to me. Its influnced my life in a few very profound ways. It was the first techno song I ever heard, way back in high school. It signalled the start of a very beautiful time in my life, when raving became central to everything I did and dancing was almost and occupation. The video (and the longer Evil Acid Baron Show also by FSOL) has influnced my aesthetic drive and design, even my sense of colour, to this very day. I keep returning to it as a signpost of where I want to be heading.
Enjoy.
